The Sandton Times embarks on the inaugural sailing from Southampton, England this March, and will bring readers the latest on this remarkable Prima-Plus Class vessel, first hand. This voyage brings The Sandton Times’ coverage of Norwegian Aqua full circle. Having had the unique privilege of touring the ship at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy – the world’s largest shipbuilding group – our return to experience its maiden voyage ensures South African audiences receive first-hand insights into this highly anticipated game-changing cruise ship.

NCL’s approach to the South African media is, let’s say, refreshingly different. While other international cruise lines might view South African cruisers like a distant port on an itinerary, NCL has clearly made an effort to engage with the local market in a way that feels, well, a little more personal. While some might still be figuring out how best to market their cruises locally, NCL seems to have mastered the art of getting their message across – without making it feel like a hard sell. A smooth sail, if you will.

Norwegian Aqua will set the bar high for modern cruising. Among its standout features will be the Aqua Slidecoaster, the world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, promising to deliver adrenaline-pumping thrills while soaring over the open ocean. Meanwhile, the Glow Court, a high-tech digital sports complex, will boast an interactive LED floor, adding a futuristic twist to onboard recreation.

NCL will introduce its first-ever Three-Bedroom Duplex Haven Suites, located in The Haven by Norwegian, an exclusive keycard-access-only complex offering premium accommodations and a secluded, luxurious cruise experience.

The Mandara Spa and Salon aboard Norwegian Aqua will promise a next-level wellness experience. The redesigned sanctuary will feature a stunning two-story indoor waterfall and a sleek marble staircase, creating a tranquil retreat for guests. Among the latest additions will be a Clay Sauna, known for its detoxifying and exfoliating benefits, as well as IV Drip Therapy, offering hydration and essential nutrients to enhance energy and immunity. The Thermal Suite will also be upgraded, featuring twice as many heated loungers as its predecessor ships. Other returning guest favourites will include the charcoal sauna, ice room, salt room, and flotation salt pool, all designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

Norwegian Aqua will introduce two brand-new entertainment productions. Revolution: A Celebration of Prince will be an immersive tribute show developed in partnership with Prince Legacy, LLC and Primary Wave Music, featuring some of Prince’s greatest hits. Another highlight will be Elements: The World Expanded, an enhanced version of NCL’s most highly rated show, blending acrobatics, magic, and dramatic visuals inspired by earth, wind, water, and fire.

Additional entertainment options will include The Aqua Theater & Club, The Improv at Sea comedy club, and The Price is Right LIVE on NCL game show. Fleetwood Mac fans will be able to look forward to Syd Norman’s Presents: Rumours, a tribute performance in the Aqua Theater & Club.

Norwegian Aqua will impress food lovers with a selection of brand-new dining concepts. Making its debut will be Sukhothai, NCL’s first-ever Thai specialty restaurant, offering a menu inspired by authentic flavors and traditional dishes. For those seeking healthier dining options, Planterie, a new eatery at the Indulge Food Hall, will serve a fully plant-based menu featuring nutritious bowls and globally inspired dishes. Wine enthusiasts will also be able to look forward to Swirl Wine Bar, a stylish lounge offering an extensive selection of wines by the glass, rare vintages, and expertly crafted pairings.

Other revamped dining spaces will include The Commodore Room, an elegant main dining venue featuring nautical-inspired décor, and Metropolitan, a sophisticated cocktail bar known for its sustainable ingredients and biodynamic wines. The latter will now feature live music, enhancing the overall experience for guests looking to unwind with a drink in hand.

Beginning in April 2025, Norwegian Aqua will embark on seven-day Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida, making stops at destinations such as Puerto Plata, Tortola, St. Thomas, and NCL’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay. The island will soon feature a multi-ship pier, making access even more convenient for guests.

Following its Caribbean season, Norwegian Aqua will shift to five- and seven-day Bermuda voyages from New York City between August and October 2025. Later in the year, the ship will cruise to the Eastern Caribbean from Miami, offering a variety of tropical getaways until April 2026.
