Backpacks With Purpose: How You Can Support The Homeless This July

The Rosebank Management District (RMD) is once again putting community compassion into action with the third annual Build-A-Backpack Campaign.

  • Launched in partnership with the Rosebank Homeless Association, this initiative has become a beacon of hope and support for those experiencing homelessness in the Rosebank area.
  • What started in 2023 as a grassroots effort to bring dignity to those in need has grown into a well-supported annual tradition.
  • In its inaugural year, dozens of backpacks were collected and distributed.
  • Visit www.sandtontimes.co.za for more stories.

Last year, over 75 backpacks made their way to the Immaculata Shelter, Rosebank’s local refuge for the homeless. This year, the goal is even more ambitious – collecting at least 500 backpacks to meet the growing need.

This campaign reminds us of the power of community. By coming together, we can extend kindness and practical help to those who need it most.

At first glance, a backpack might seem like a small gesture. But for someone experiencing homelessness, it can mean everything – a mobile home for their belongings, a reminder that someone cares, a spark of restored dignity.

Each donated backpack is filled with essentials: warm clothing, toiletries, towels, blankets, and even washing powder. These are items many of us take for granted but are deeply appreciated by those who often go without. Importantly, the campaign welcomes not only filled backpacks but also new or gently used backpacks and individual supplies.

While the Immaculata Shelter officially accommodates about 100 residents, more than 550 individuals rely on its services. The shelter doesn’t just provide a bed for the night – it serves as a lifeline, offering meals, clothing, and daily essentials for a growing community in need.

The Build-A-Backpack Campaign helps bridge a critical gap, supporting not just shelter residents but those who depend on the facility’s extended services. Every backpack received can help someone stay warm, clean, and a little more prepared to face each day.

Contributing to the campaign is simple, but the impact is profound. Here’s how to get involved:
• Donate a backpack – either filled with essentials or empty for someone else to fill.
• Drop off warm clothing – scarves, beanies, shoes, socks, and jackets are especially appreciated during the winter months.
• Provide toiletries – soap, toothpaste, sanitary pads, deodorant, and razors are much-needed and often in short supply.
• Give towels, blankets, and washing powder – practical items that are invaluable in a shelter environment.

All donations can be dropped off at the Rosebank Visitor Centre inside Rosebank Mall (Bath Avenue entrance). Please note: the charity box has been moved from the mall floor to the Visitor Centre, so be sure to head there with your donations.

For large or bulk donations, the RMD team is happy to assist. Contact Basil Ngakane, Rosebank Operations Manager, at +27-71-764-1972 to coordinate your contribution.

With its 2025 target of 500 backpacks, the RMD is calling on local businesses, schools, places of worship, and community groups to rally behind the campaign. Team-building days, CSR initiatives, or even internal drives can all be powerful ways to participate. Whether you pledge to fill five backpacks or fifty, every effort helps.
